Spring watering times: Every other day for 15 minutes per zone.

New seeding watering times: At least twice per day for 10 minutes per zone.

Fall watering times: A few times per week if the weather is warm and dry. There is no need to water if it’s been rainy.

The lawn has stopped growing, the leaves are falling off the trees, and everything is ramping up to winter dormancy. So, why do we fertilize this time of year?

Applying a winterizer is the most important application made during the season. During the spring and the summer months, grass plants use fertilizers to grow and reproduce. Since all this energy is being spent with these two functions, there is little root growth taking place.

In the late fall and early winter, however, the grass stops producing leaf growth. Since the food provided to the plant is no longer spent on top growth, the energy is used to grow roots. The deeper and stronger the roots are, the healthier the lawn will be!

Additional food reserves that are not spent remain in the soil during the spring when lawns emerge from winter dormancy. Since these foods are already available, the lawn turns lush and green quicker.

Turf grass requires three factors for thick, lush growth: water, sunlight, and soil nutrients. If any one of those items are missing, it makes growing grass incredibly difficult. If two of those items are missing, it’s almost impossible. That’s why it’s so difficult to generate grass growth under trees.

One of the quickest ways to introduce more light onto your lawn is to thin out nearby trees or remove them entirely. Because trees boost property values and curb appeal, we recommend thinning them. Beyond that, you can further support your lawn by getting regular fall reseeding services performed. Best lawn watering practices tell us that you should water your lawn and plants as early in the morning if possible. When you water in the morning, temperatures are lower which means there is less water loss due to evaporation. Likewise, wind speeds are usually lowest in the morning, which ensures that the water is going where you intend.

Watering too late in the day can leave the leaf surface wet and damp overnight, which can lead to fungal disease showing up on materials. If you water later in the day, make sure it is early enough so that the leaves have a chance to dry off.

Resist the urge to water more frequently. Easily available water makes root systems lazy. Unless there is an extremely hot and dry period coming up, try to avoid mid-day watering. Stick with the early morning irrigation schedule for best results. You should also avoid evening waterings, as they can lead to fungal issues.

As the old saying goes, “Leaves of three, let it be.” Poison ivy is most commonly identified by its signature three-leaflet growth pattern. Another common identifier is the stalk of the middle leaflet is much longer than the stalks of the two side leaflets.

Generally speaking, mushrooms aren’t harmful to your turf or your landscape plants. Aside from ingestion, it’s very rare to be hurt or become sick from the presence of mushrooms in your lawn and landscape. Feel free to mow over them or break them down with a shovel.

One spot of concern with mushrooms is if they are growing out of your trees, which indicates there is rot and deadwood present. Your best course of action is to contact a certified arborist to see if the tree can be rehabilitated. For all other fungi-related questions, contact the team at Green Lawn.

A thick leaf cover on the lawn is detrimental to the overall health of your turf grass. Leaves deprive your lawn of light, nutrients, and oxygen. If you want a lush lawn in the spring, do not allow leaves to accumulate.

What we commonly refer to as “grubs” are the larval forms of June Bugs, June Beetles, and May Beetles. Adult beetles and their larval forms are highly damaging to turf, plants, and trees, and are a general nuisance in lawns and landscapes.

Grub treatment is best applied in early July, as that’s when the larvae are actively feeding on the root system. Granular insecticides should be applied and watered in to allow for the most effective grub control.

Grub control is the key 3rd step in Green Lawn’s 7-Step fertilizer and weed control program. If you’re having grub or lawn problems, call us at (913) 745-4503 for a free estimate on services.

Landscape/Hardscape FAQs

We offer tree and shrub programs created specifically to address your landscapes needs. These programs treat disease and insect problems commonly found in applicable varieties of plants to keep your landscape healthy throughout the year. We also offer fall deep root fertilization for trees to increase the density, height, and vigor of the tree.

With cooler temperatures and increased rainfall, the fall months typically make it an ideal time for plants to flourish. Plants also have the entire winter and spring to develop a solid root system, ensuring they are prepared for the upcoming growing season.

Kansas plays host to lawn pests such as grubs, armyworms, bagworms, aphids, emerald ash borers, Japanese beetles, and spider mites that can damage your landscape plants and soil. You can count on professionals at Green Lawn to deliver pesticide treatments to control these pests on both a preventative and curative basis. Contact us today for a quote.

Green Lawn does not perform mammal or rodent pest removal such as moles, raccoons, skunks, voles, or mice.

Pavers offer many advantages over traditional concrete slabs, often making it the best solution. They come in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. A good design can implement endless options that would be nearly impossible to do with concrete.

Environmental impacts such as moisture and temperature often lead to concrete cracking. Pavers, however, have a natural interlock between them with a sand joint allowing them to expand and contract without breaking.

Should you ever need to repair your concrete, patching and epoxy materials will make the concrete repair look noticeably different from the original. Pavers, on the other hand, can simply be pulled up, repaired, and re-installed, leaving you with a consistent surface.

To promote their development, tree stakes should not be left in for more than a year. Once that year has passed, remove any stakes, wires, and guides that might constrict the tree.

Mulching your landscape beds is an important aspect of grounds maintenance for several reasons. The mulch helps prevent weed growth by preventing light-to-soil contact. It also prevents weeds from having the required surface to build a root system in. Further, mulch is effective at retaining nutrients and water in the soil as well as providing a very attractive ground covering.

Every late fall and early winter we get a lot of worried calls and questions about the health of pine trees because their needles are turning yellow. Worry not. This is perfectly normal and a healthy cycle for the tree.

If you notice needles yellowing and dropping off towards the tip of the stem instead of the interior, there could be an issue. Also, if the tree drops more than 1/3 of its needles in a season, that could be another cause for alarm. Contact your Green Lawn representative or an arborist to examine the tree, just in case.

Nutsedge (aka nutgrass and water grass) is a perennial sedge that occurs in areas that remain wet or damp in the lawn and landscape. It is primarily identified by its bright, lime green growth that stands taller than turf grasses and its triangular stems.

Do NOT pull nutsedge by hand. Doing so may speed along its development. The best control method for nutsedge is early detection and a chemical spray. A specially blended herbicide developed just for nutsedge will kill the plant entirely down to the tuber and eliminate the weed at its base.

If you suspect you have nutsedge, please give us a call at (913) 745-4503 today for a consultation. Please note that if you are on our 7-step program, nutsedge control is included as part of your lawn care program.

Sprinkler System FAQs

Green Lawn is happy to help Johnson County homeowners troubleshoot malfunctioning sprinkler systems. Give us a call so that we can find out more about the problem. Chances are, we’ve encountered the issue before.

This is the most important step in sprinkler system maintenance. To protect the system from freezing temperatures, all water must be purged from the system using compressed air. The backflow and controller must also be shut down at this time.

Irrigation systems are susceptible to freeze damage when temperatures dip below freezing. Systems with above-ground backflow devices (common in areas like Olathe and Lee Summit) are particularly prone to freeze damage. A damaged backflow preventer can lead to catastrophic damage and major water loss. Lawn sprinkler winterization is quick and simple and will save you money and headaches in the long run.

  • Close manual drain valves.
  • Start up the system.
  • Check the backflow device.
  • Verify operation of each zone.
  • Check each zone for leaks, proper operation, and head adjustment.
  • Clean any clogged in-line or head filters.
  • Check and adjust the controller to proper settings.

One of the first steps to achieving a beautiful lawn is the addition of a quality sprinkler system. Each system Green Lawn installs is designed specifically for your lawn and utilizes key design fundamentals such as “head-to-head coverage” and “match precipitation.” Fundamentals such as these are the difference between a great system and a poorly designed one.

Our professional installation crew uses Hunter irrigation products for their quality, unmatched performance, and durability. We stand behind our products with a no-cost comprehensive warranty.

There will be some disruption to any yard when installing a sprinkler system, but we take every step possible to ensure that your lawn is returned to its original condition when we are done. We utilize equipment like the vibratory plow for all pipe installations, which is a much less invasive process than a trencher. We also seed all pull lines after the job is complete, helping any grass that has been disturbed to heal quickly.

Generally, the scars from the installation are gone within two to three weeks following the installation. One of the main ways that we have been able to distance ourselves from the competition is by treating the lawns of our customers with the same care and respect as we do our own.

Whether it’s the old fashioned “sweat” drip hoses from the hardware store or high-efficiency, low volume integral drip emitters, drip systems are designed to deliver water directly to the soil in and around the root zone of the plant.

Whereas overhead spray irrigation is estimated to be between 50-70% effective at providing irrigation to plant material, drip irrigation is estimated to be closer to 90% effective. This efficiency decreases the amount of water you must use to irrigate and increases the available water for the plants exactly where you want it.

Please call Green Lawn at (913) 745-4503 for any questions about drip irrigation and lawn care services.

Lighting FAQs

The perfect add-on to any landscape is the addition of night lighting. Create shadows, illuminate fountains and statues, light up trees and accent plantings, backdrop for depth, light entrances and walkways for security. The possibilities are endless!

LED lights are simply the best choice for your holiday lights. Why use LED?

  • Higher brilliance vs. traditional lights.
  • Broader selection of colors and types.
  • More strands per circuit means less wires and extension cords running around your house.
  • Cool to the touch.
  • Energy savings up to 90%.
  • Virtually unbreakable bulbs.
  • No changing bulbs in the ice and snow! Less than a 0.5% failure rate.
  • Rated to light for 100,000 hours. That equates to 30+ years if you use the lights an average of eight hours per night.

Aeration, Verticutting & Seeding FAQs

If you live in Kansas, the answer is probably YES! Most lawns in Kansas have compacted clay soil, which restricts the movement of air and soil to the roots. Unlike garden soil, the soil under lawns tends to compact because it is never turned or worked with.

Aerating your lawn is an alternative to tilling. Good drainage is one of the keys to having a healthy lawn, but all too often our lawns in Kansas grow on heavy clay soil that packs down easily, which can cause drainage problems.

Oxygen in the soil is vital for healthy roots. Root growth is inhibited by clay and compacted soils because of a restricted oxygen supply. Aerating improves rooting and problem soils by allowing oxygen in. An aerator does this job mechanically without destroying the turf. Remember, 90% of grass is in the roots!

  • Reduces soil compaction
  • Penetrates heavy thatch
  • Allows for more efficient watering and fertilizing
  • Enhances root growth
  • Enriches surface soil
  • Decreases water run-off

Homeowners should aerate their lawns in the fall and in the spring for the first three years, and once a year in the fall thereafter.

If your lawn is thin, has bare spots, or if you would like to introduce improved varieties of fescue that is resilient to heat and diseases, verticutting is the best solution. Verticutting is a process that creates shallow linear slits in the lawn for the seed to germinate in. The process is highly effective and will produce germination rates of 80% or better with proper watering. Verticutters also help break up the thatch layer, keeping it at an acceptable level.

The window to seed is very small. We typically do not recommend seeding in eastern Kansas after October 15th due to the potential for frost.

Seed normally sprouts between 7-10 days. Follow the watering schedule best practices for optimal growth.

First 3 Weeks: Lightly water three times per day (ex: 8am/12pm/4pm)
Weeks 4 and 5: Water once daily. These waterings will need to be about twice as long as the waterings of the first three weeks.
Remainder of the season: Water 1-2 times so that your lawn is receiving approximately ½” to 1” of water per week.

The ideal seeding season is in the fall months of September and early October when outdoor temperatures are moderate, weed pressure is low, and the soil temperature is ideal for grass germination.

Spring seeding can also produce wonderful results, but it should be done using a precautionary approach to mitigate weed issues. Contact the team at Green Lawn to learn more about the seeding process or to schedule service.
